Cylinders UCEM
Information about UCEM
UCEM security cylinders, locks and fittings
Origin and background of UCEM
UCEM comes from Unión Cerrajera de Mondragón, a historic Spanish company founded in 1906 in Mondragón, Gipuzkoa. It was born from the merger of two locksmithing companies in the area and became an industrial reference in the manufacture of locks, padlocks, fittings and metallurgical products during much of the 20th century.
The brand brings together approximately 120 years of locksmithing tradition. After different corporate stages, UCEM is part of the commercial offer of DOM-MCM together with the DOM, MCM and Telesco brands. In today's market it is associated with locksmithing solutions, cylinders, locks, conventional fittings and components intended for homes, retail, residents' associations and construction projects.
UCEM products for doors and entry points
The range linked to UCEM makes it possible to resolve anything from a basic cylinder replacement to a lock renewal. The choice should not be made by brand alone: you have to check the cylinder size, the type of cam, the material of the door and whether the mechanism is mortice, rim or integrated into metal joinery.
- Euro-profile security cylinders, half cylinders, models with a thumbturn and double-clutch versions.
- Mortice locks for wooden and metal doors, with one or several locking points.
- Rim locks, latches, latch bolts, deadbolts and mechanisms for entry doors.
- Keys, property cards and master-keying solutions to organise access permissions.
- Fittings, strike plates, handles, compatible escutcheons and repair accessories.
On a front door, the cylinder must work together with a lock in good condition and an escutcheon that protects it. An isolated installation does not solve a loose frame, a dropped door or a worn strike plate.
Protection, keys and security standards
The security features change according to the reference. Among the six-pin UCEM cylinders there are configurations with a flat key or dimple key, steel pins against drilling, specific pin profiles and a property card to identify key copying. The double clutch, present in some versions, makes it possible to open from one side even when a key is inserted in the other.
The i6 Plus system is marketed as a security cylinder with a dimple key, six pins, anti-bumping, a programmed break line or anti-snap, an anti-drill pin and a double clutch. The intended break aims to ensure that, in a violent attempt, part of the cylinder remains protecting the mechanism. This type of feature gains effectiveness when the cylinder sits correctly flush with an escutcheon.
The UNE-EN 1303 standard establishes classes of key security, durability, corrosion and attack resistance for cylinders. It is worth verifying the classification on the data sheet and packaging of each model, since a specific certification should not be attributed to the whole UCEM range. A locksmith can identify the compatible solution and assess the real level of risk of the door.
Models and recommended applications
The UCEM 2000S2 cylinder is a six-pin security option for euro-profile locks. It can be found in different sizes and finishes, with a long cam and double clutch depending on the version. It is suitable for upgrading wooden or metal doors that already incorporate this cylinder format and need to recover a convenient, functional closure.
For a primary home, a holiday apartment or a door with greater exposure, i6 Plus provides additional protection against bumping, drilling and breakage. Its master-keying capacity is useful in residents' associations, offices or for owners with several doors. The UCEM 2058 lock, equipped in certain configurations with the 2000SN security cylinder, can be an alternative for renewing single-point mechanisms, provided the sizes of the housing and the strike plate are compatible.
Real advantages and drawbacks of UCEM
An advantage of UCEM is its long association with Spanish locksmithing and the availability of solutions adapted to conventional doors. The variety of cylinders, locks and replacement parts can make a repair easier without changing the whole door. Keyed-alike or master-keying systems also help to reduce the keys in circulation and organise access in homes, residents' associations or small businesses.
As a limit, not all models are geared towards the same level of security. A six-pin cylinder may be enough on an internal or moderate-risk entry point, but perhaps not on an isolated home or premises with valuable goods. For these cases it is worth considering a range with confirmed protection, a reinforced escutcheon and a lock in good condition. If the frame gives way or the door rubs, repairing those defects is as important as changing the cylinder.
Installation and maintenance of a UCEM cylinder
To choose the size, the centre of the fixing screw is taken as a reference and measured to both sides of the cylinder. The aim is for it to protrude as little as possible from the external escutcheon. You should also check the cam and the type of cylinder required: double, half cylinder or with a thumbturn. An incorrect size can leave the cylinder exposed or prevent the key from turning.
Maintenance consists of cleaning the keys and applying lubricant specific to cylinders, avoiding dense oils. You have to check the assembly if the key jams, the rotor turns with play, it is hard to remove the key or external damage is observed. After a house move, a loss of keys, a change of tenant or an attempted intrusion, the preventive change of the cylinder is a prudent decision.
