Information about MOTTURA
MOTTURA security cylinders and locking solutions
An Italian brand specialising in security
MOTTURA, commercially known as Mottura Serrature di Sicurezza, is an Italian firm dedicated to locks, cylinders and protection systems for doors. Its origin is in the Turin area, in northern Italy, during the country's decades of greatest industrial development. It has a history of around 60 years in the field of residential and professional security.
Mottura's production is kept in Italy and its distribution reaches more than 60 countries. The brand has become established especially in security doors, armoured doors, wooden entry doors and metal entry points. Its catalogue ranges from traditional locking mechanisms to European security cylinders and solutions that seek to control the duplication of keys.
What products MOTTURA offers
Mottura's offer is geared towards resolving door security as a whole. For this reason, in addition to cylinders, it makes locks and protections that make it possible to adapt the level of resistance to the type of home, premises or installation. Not all references are interchangeable: a security door, for example, may require a specific lock and cam.
- Champions® euro-profile cylinders for euro-profile locks, in double, half-cylinder, thumbturn or emergency-function versions.
- Locks for security doors, with euro cylinder systems, double-bit keys and 3DKey solutions.
- Locks for wooden doors and gates, as well as options for iron doors and metal entry points.
- Defender® and protective escutcheons to protect the cylinder against attack attempts on the outer area.
- Accessories, keys, master-keying systems and configurations for homes, residents' associations, offices and building sites.
This approach makes it possible to combine cylinder, lock and escutcheon coherently. Installing a good-quality cylinder on a door with an insufficient protector can leave the most vulnerable point of the entry exposed.
Technology, resistance and certifications
The Champions® range concentrates Mottura's euro-profile security cylinders. Its models incorporate different combinations of pins, profile controls and internal elements to increase the difficulty of manipulation. In the versions that declare it, there is protection against bumping, picking, key tracing and drilling attempts. Anti-extraction resistance also benefits from a correctly installed Defender® escutcheon.
All Champions® euro-profile cylinders are certified to UNI EN 1303 at high classification levels, including requirements relating to key security, drill resistance, durability and corrosion. The brand's documentation notes bumping and picking resistance certifications for specific ranges. The BKC labelling identifies the versions tested against bumping and picking, while TRC refers to resistance to key tracing or impressioning.
The controlled break, present in certain cylinders, is designed so that the body fractures at a predetermined area in a violent attack, making it harder to reach the internal mechanism. A locksmith should always check the compatibility between cylinder, escutcheon and lock before fitting.
Notable ranges for each need
Within Champions®, the Silver series includes C10 and Champions® PRO. The latter is appropriate for the front doors of homes that seek protected key copying and resistance to manipulation techniques. It uses an MM-profile key and profile controls that, in certain picking or bumping attempts, can block the cylinder to prevent it from opening.
The Gold series, with models such as C28PLUS, C39 and CP6, are aimed at users who need to extend key functions, duplicate control or master-keying. For more demanding doors, Mottura offers the Platinum series, which includes C55 and C3D. These are suitable solutions for single-family homes, ground-floor units, offices or doors with an already reinforced security system. In all cases, you have to choose the exact size and the compatible cam configuration.
Advantages and limits of choosing MOTTURA
Mottura stands out for specialising in the cylinder as well as the lock and the escutcheon, an advantage when a complete upgrade of the entry point is being considered. The controlled-duplication options by means of a property card can be useful for families, rental owners, residents' associations and businesses that want to know who can request new keys. It also makes it possible to create master-keying to avoid carrying an excessive keyring.
The drawback is that an advanced security system requires a greater investment and is not always necessary. Authorised copies may need a specialist centre, something that should be planned before choosing the model. On an internal door or a low-risk storeroom, a simpler solution may be enough. If the door has play, the frame is damaged or the lock fails, it is best to repair those elements first so that the cylinder does not bear a function that is not its own.
Installation and care of the cylinder
To install a Mottura cylinder you have to measure each side from the centre of the fixing screw to the outer faces. A cylinder that is too long can protrude from the escutcheon and lose protection. The cam, the thickness of the door and the position of the locking points should also be reviewed. A door that rubs or needs to be pushed to close forces the cylinder and reduces its service life.
It is recommended to use lubricant specific to locks, without applying greases or dense oils. A key that enters with difficulty, an irregular turn, play in the rotor, forcing marks or a key broken inside are signs that the mechanism should be checked. After a house move, a loss of keys, the end of a rental or an attempted intrusion, replacing the cylinder is a sensible preventive measure.
