Information about JIS
JIS: locks, cylinders and locking systems for doors
Who JIS is and where it comes from
JIS is a Spanish brand of locks and closures currently linked to CDVI Iberia. Its manufacturing takes place in Castellbisbal, Barcelona, and the firm has 90 years of experience in the sector. This background explains the presence of its locks in homes, residents' associations, business premises and service doors of different periods.
The brand was born and grew in the field of mechanical locksmithing, with rim solutions and components intended to protect entry points. Over time it has incorporated electric closures, electromagnetic locks and opening devices for installations that need to control who enters and when. JIS thus combines traditional references with products geared towards automation and access control.
What products JIS makes
The JIS catalogue covers very different locking needs. Mechanical locks remain relevant on residential and commercial doors, while the electric range meets the needs of communal entrances, offices, shops and doors linked to door entry or presence control systems.
- Rim locks with a latch, deadbolt, internal thumbturn and different directions of opening.
- Fixed and adjustable cylinders for JIS locks, with nickel-silver keys depending on the reference.
- Security locks, latch locks, security chains and mounting accessories.
- Electric closures for doors and panic bars, including the 1600 and 1700 series.
- Electric rim locks, electric strikes and electromagnetic closures.
- Keypads and opening systems by code, card or other credentials.
The choice should start from the type of door. A rim lock is a common solution on wooden or metal leaves where the aim is to reinforce the closure without a major modification. An electric closure, on the other hand, requires assessing the electrical installation, the type of door, the power supply and compatibility with the existing opening system.
Security of JIS cylinders and locks
With JIS it is important not to confuse the solidity of a lock's case with the specific performance of its cylinder. Some traditional references incorporate stainless steel bolts, two turns of the closure, a fixed or adjustable cylinder and nickel-silver keys. These features favour durable use, but they do not in themselves mean that the cylinder has current protection against bumping, picking, drilling or extraction.
Old models with a fixed cylinder and a conventional key should be reviewed with particular attention if they protect a front door. To be able to state that a cylinder is anti-bumping, anti-pick, anti-drill or anti-extraction, you have to consult the data sheet of its specific cylinder; it is not advisable to attribute these functions generally to the whole JIS brand. Nor should a UNE-EN 1303 certification be taken for granted if it does not expressly appear in the documentation of the installed reference.
When a JIS lock allows the cylinder to be replaced or adapted, an upgrade with a modern cylinder and a suitable protective escutcheon can be considered. Our locksmithing service can check the compatibility without compromising the operation of the mechanism or the alignment of the door.
Common JIS models and uses
The JIS 35-7 lock is a rim reference with a deadbolt and a latch operated by a handle. It has a fixed 52 millimetre cylinder and is designed for external doors with a defined hand of opening. It is a practical solution for equivalent replacements, provided the size, direction and condition of the strike plate are checked.
The 239, 240, 242 and 243 families are among the brand's classic mechanical configurations. The 239 and 242 models use five stainless steel bolts and two turns of the closure; the 240 and 243 versions add a latch operated by a knob and four bolts. The references with an adjustable cylinder make it possible to fit doors of different thicknesses, roughly between 35 and 80 millimetres depending on the model.
The JIS 340 incorporates a security chain, a useful function for opening the door ajar with greater control. For residents' associations, offices or emergency exits, the electric solutions and the closures for panic bars should be selected in accordance with the building's usage and evacuation requirements.
Real advantages and drawbacks of JIS
JIS pays off especially when you need to replace an existing lock of the same brand or repair a door that already uses its sizes and fittings. Its experience in mechanical and electric closures makes it easy to find solutions for homes, secondary entry points, business premises and communal doors. The possibility of opting for adjustable cylinders is also useful on doors with unusual thicknesses.
As a limit, a rim lock with an old cylinder should not be kept solely for its external resistance if it protects an exposed main entrance. If the cylinder is conventional, there is a loss of keys or there are signs of manipulation, it may be worth upgrading the cylinder, adding an escutcheon or considering a more up-to-date locking system. The resistance of the body does not replace the security of the cylinder.
Installation and maintenance of JIS locks
Before installing a JIS lock, the hand of opening, the thickness of the door, the distance to the frame, the position of the strike plate and the type of cylinder are reviewed. On non-reversible models, getting the hand wrong forces a change of reference. If it is an adjustable cylinder, the adjustment must be firm and without play.
Maintenance consists of checking the screws, bolts and strike plate, cleaning the key entry and using lubricants specific to locksmithing. A check should be requested when the key jams, the deadbolt does not enter fully, the mechanism has play, the door has received a blow or keys have been lost. On electric closures, the connections and emergency operation are also inspected.
