Information about CVL
CVL: locks and cylinders for aluminium, metal and wooden doors
Who CVL is
CVL, linked to Sistemas Valle Léniz, is a Spanish locking-systems company founded in 1935 in Aretxabaleta, Gipuzkoa. It was born in the industrial setting of the Alto Deba, a district with a long locksmithing tradition, and has carried out its activity in the manufacture of locks for different door profiles.
With around 90 years of experience, CVL specialises in locks for aluminium, steel and wooden joinery, as well as solutions for escape routes and access control. Its position in the market stands out for its technical approach: it adapts locks, strike plates and accessories to the requirements of each door system. This makes it a common brand in residential installations, communal entrances, shops and buildings with metal joinery.
CVL product range for doors
The CVL catalogue combines locking mechanisms with mounting and security components. Rather than focusing solely on the domestic cylinder, the brand offers complete solutions so that a door works, closes and is correctly aligned with its frame.
- Euro-profile cylinders with a short and long cam, as well as cylinders for specific locks.
- Mortice locks for aluminium, steel, wood and PVC.
- Rim locks, deadbolts, latches and bolt levers.
- Automatic multi-point locks for hinged, pivoting and sliding doors.
- Mechanical and electric strike plates, escutcheons, keyhole covers, panic bars and accessories.
The mortice series can incorporate a sliding lever, tilting lever, hook or bolt, depending on the profile and the use of the door. For this reason, replacing a CVL lock requires checking the centre distance, the case depth, the faceplate, the direction of opening and the cam size.
Technologies and security level
The CVL J6-601C cylinder is a euro profile with a reversible flat key and six locking pins. It incorporates a brass body and rotors, stainless steel pins, counter-pins and springs, anti-drill pins on both sides and pin shapes designed to make picking more difficult. The series documentation indicates tests in accordance with UNE-EN 1303:2016.
In this particular range, anti-pick and anti-drill protection is expressly defined. However, it is not advisable to attribute anti-bumping or anti-extraction features generally to all CVL cylinders: they depend on the reference and, in the case of extraction resistance, also on the escutcheon and on how the assembly is installed. A suitable escutcheon can reinforce the outer area of the cylinder against drilling or gripping attacks.
The dimple key, the property card and master-keying can be considered when the lock accepts a compatible cylinder that incorporates those features. A locksmithing service should check the cam before recommending an upgrade, especially on aluminium doors with a short-cam lock.
Notable models and ranges
The J6-601C series is an option for aluminium or metal doors with a euro-profile housing and a 13.5 mm short cam. It can be requested with a double clutch, a practical function for opening from outside if a key is placed on the inside. It is suitable for residential entry points where the aim is to replace a basic cylinder with one offering anti-drill and anti-pick reinforcement.
The 1984 and 1995 series are aimed at metal joinery, with an 85 mm centre distance, a reversible latch and electric strike plate options. For communal entrances and doors that require autonomous locking, the automatic multi-point solution 2A2 uses three latches and two high-low hooks. On exit doors, the CVL panic range has CE marking on specific references.
Real advantages and drawbacks
The advantage of CVL is its ability to adapt to aluminium and steel profiles where a standard lock does not always fit. Having coordinated locks, strike plates and accessories simplifies the repair of communal entrance doors, homes with metal joinery and commercial entry points. Its multi-point and panic solutions also meet more technical usage needs.
As a point to consider, CVL products require the measurements and the type of profile to be identified correctly. A long-cam cylinder does not replace a short-cam one, and an aluminium door may have different requirements from a wooden door. For an exposed front door, it may be worth complementing the mechanism with a certified cylinder and a security escutcheon. The real level depends on the whole door, not on a single part.
Installation and maintenance
Before changing a CVL cylinder, you have to measure from the central screw to each side of the cylinder and include the thickness of the escutcheon and rose. The cylinder should be well fitted and not protrude excessively. On multi-point locks, it is also necessary to check that the hooks, bolts and latches enter their strike plates without having to force the door.
A key that scrapes, a stiff lever, a latch that does not return to its position or a door that has to be lifted to close indicate wear or misalignment. Cleaning and lubrication with specific products help to preserve the mechanism. After a loss of keys, a house move or signs of tampering, it is worth considering changing the cylinder.
