CR Serrature: locks and cylinders for security doors
Who CR Serrature is
CR Serrature is an Italian brand founded in 1955, specialising in mechanical locks for wooden doors, security doors and secure entry points. Over roughly seven decades it has developed rim, mortice, euro-cylinder and double-bit mechanisms, with a technical approach closely tied to the replacement and upgrading of existing locks.
Today, the activity of the former CR Serrature is part of DOM CR, within the DOM Security group. The brand maintains a significant position in the Italian security lock market thanks to its large base of installed mechanisms and to the compatibility of many of its replacement solutions. This makes it possible to renew certain locks without completely modifying the door, provided a professional confirms the measurements and the locking system.
Product range for doors and enclosures
CR Serrature manufactures and distributes solutions for different types of door, from a residential front door to a security door with several locking points. Its catalogue combines traditional locks with versions prepared for a euro cylinder, making it easier to upgrade old double-bit mechanisms.
- Mortice and rim locks for wooden and security doors.
- Single-point, three-point and multi-point locks, with lateral and vertical bolts.
- Pump cylinders, euro-profile cylinders and DOM-CR security cylinders.
- Double-bit locks, gear mechanisms and replacement central cases.
- Deflectors, rods, strike plates, escutcheons, plates, keyhole covers and mounting hardware.
The various references may vary by hand of opening, key entry, centre distance and rod length. For this reason, it is not advisable to choose a lock solely from the photograph: the exact reference of the mechanism and the measurements of the door determine whether the replacement will be compatible.
CR Serrature technologies and security
On CR locks, resistance does not depend on the cylinder alone. Multi-point systems distribute the locking across several points of the leaf, while models prepared for a euro cylinder allow you to select a cylinder with anti-bumping, anti-pick, anti-drill and anti-extraction protection. This conversion can significantly raise the security of a door that still uses a double-bit key.
The Blocco Clever device, present on certain CR locks for euro cylinders, locks the mechanism in the event of an attack on the cylinder. It does not replace a protective escutcheon nor does it automatically turn any cylinder into a high-security model, but it adds a useful barrier when combined with a suitable cylinder and a correct installation.
The current cylinders in the DOM-CR range may incorporate a dimple key, property card, double clutch and master-keying possibilities. For example, the Titan K66 cylinder achieves, according to its data sheet, class 6 for key security and class D for attack resistance in accordance with EN 1303:2015. These ratings correspond to the specific cylinder, not to every CR lock installed in a home.
Notable models and ranges
The CR 2155 PE is a lock for a security door prepared for a euro cylinder, with three locking points and four bolts. It can be combined with the Blocco Clever system and is suitable for upgrading front doors that need to move away from an old mechanism without replacing the whole leaf.
The 2151PEN and 2155G models are further options with a euro cylinder and right- or left-hand configurations. For wooden doors or rim installations, the 2250 and 3000 series offer solutions with a pump cylinder or euro profile, depending on the model. In all cases you must check whether the door needs a reversible lock, a gear lock, or one with or without a latch.
Real advantages and drawbacks
CR Serrature pays off especially when there is already a lock from the brand and the aim is to keep the structure of the door. Its replacement mechanisms can simplify a repair or a conversion to a euro cylinder, avoiding unnecessary work. The variety of multi-point locks is useful for security doors that still have a frame, hinges and bolts in good condition.
As a limitation, some old double-bit locks require a complete conversion to install a modern cylinder. In addition, a poorly aligned multi-point mechanism will continue to work with difficulty even if a high-security cylinder is fitted. On damaged doors, with a weakened frame or several worn components, it is preferable to review the whole assembly before investing in a lock change.
Installation and maintenance of CR locks
A correct installation starts by identifying the lock reference, the direction of opening and the position of the locking points. When installing a euro cylinder, it should be fitted flush to the escutcheon and not protrude excessively. It is also worth checking that the rods and deflectors operate the bolts without rubbing.
If the key turns stiffly, the handle has play, the bolts do not enter their strike plates or the door has to be pushed to close, it is time to carry out a check. Use lubricants specific to locks and avoid thick oils. After a loss of keys, a change of owner or an attempted manipulation, changing the cylinder should be considered a preventive measure.
