ARCU: multi-point locks and solutions for front doors
Who ARCU is
ARCU is a Spanish brand historically linked to the manufacture of security locks for residential doors. Its origins lie in Barcelona: the future partners began their activity in 1958 and, in 1979, combined their experience to develop the ARCU locks project. Its first parts were made by hand in the Sants district, before evolving towards more complex locking mechanisms.
With roughly more than 65 years of history since those beginnings, ARCU is a well-known name above all in armoured and front doors installed in Spain over several decades. Its name is especially associated with the ARCU-Block multi-point system, still present in numerous homes and businesses. For this reason, in addition to complete installations, much of the current work consists of maintaining, repairing or modernising existing locks.
Compatible locks, cylinders and fittings
The traditional ARCU range centres on mortice locks, central cases, lever mechanisms, Swiss-profile cylinders and multi-point assemblies. These are components designed to lock the door at several points and reinforce the join between leaf and frame. The configurations vary according to the hand of opening, the height of the door and the type of key.

On a lock of this type, the cylinder does not always have the usual euro-profile format. Identifying the profile, the drive system and the exact measurements is essential before ordering a replacement. A similar appearance does not guarantee that the cylinder will operate the lock correctly.
Security: what an ARCU lock protects
The security principle of ARCU-Block is based on multi-point locking and on the anti-crowbar elements that cover vulnerable areas between the door and the frame. Depending on the model, it may have several front bolts and vertical locking points, as well as an L-shaped strike plate and a Z-shaped faceplate. This configuration spreads the effort of a levering attempt across more points than a simple lock.
The anti-bumping, anti-pick, anti-drill and anti-extraction properties depend particularly on the installed cylinder. Many older ARCU locks fit lever mechanisms or Swiss-profile cylinders that today can be upgraded to compatible security cylinders. There are ARCU/STS Swiss-profile cylinders with an anti-bumping system, and also solutions from other manufacturers prepared for the corresponding toothed ring.
Dimple keys, the property card and master-keying are possible when a modern cylinder that supports them is installed. The UNE-EN 1303 certification, if required, should be checked on the data sheet of the specific cylinder, as it cannot automatically be attributed to the original lock. A locksmithing professional can review the assembly before proposing a conversion or a security upgrade.
The most common ARCU models and ranges
The ARCU-Block 509 series is found on front doors with multi-point locking, while the ARCU-Block 511 is known for its nine front bolts and is offered in configurations with different key systems. These are suitable solutions for armoured or reinforced doors where the frame and leaf can take advantage of multi-point locking.
The 513 family incorporates a configuration with a greater number of bolts, geared towards doors with higher structural demands. There are also replacement central cases to keep the ARCU-Block assembly and options that allow a change from lever or Swiss profile to euro profile. This last alternative can make future cylinder replacements easier, but requires confirming compatibility with the mechanism, the escutcheon and the door.
Real advantages and drawbacks
The main advantage of ARCU is that many of its multi-point locks have a robust and repairable structure. If the crossbars, bolts and frame are in good condition, upgrading the cylinder or the central case can prolong the door's service life and improve control over the keys. It is a solution that particularly pays off in homes with an ARCU door already installed.
As a point to weigh, older systems may use sizes, profiles or rings that are not interchangeable with a conventional cylinder. In addition, an old lever lock does not on its own offer the performance of a modern cylinder against current techniques. On deteriorated doors, weak frames or when a complete renovation is sought, it may be worth considering an integral solution. Compatibility should be verified before buying any replacement part.
Installation and maintenance of ARCU cylinders
To replace an ARCU cylinder you have to identify the lock model, the cylinder profile, the type of fixing —side or front— and, if there is one, the number of teeth on the ring. You should also check whether the door is right- or left-handed and review the condition of the external escutcheon. Forcing a cylinder that does not match can damage the central case.
A key that needs several attempts, bolts that do not slide in smoothly, play in the handle, rubbing when closing or marks on the escutcheon are signs to have it checked. It is advisable to keep the locking points clean and to lubricate the mechanism with suitable products, without applying dense oils in excess. After a loss of keys, a change of ownership or an attempted intrusion, changing the cylinder should be considered as soon as possible.
