Dehesa de Campoamor: pine woods, beaches and Mediterranean flavour in Orihuela Costa
Dehesa de Campoamor is a coastal residential area located in the south of the province of Alicante, in the Comunidad Valenciana, within the Vega Baja del Segura district. It forms part of Orihuela Costa (municipal area of Orihuela) and occupies its southernmost end, between Cabo Roig to the north and Pilar de la Horadada to the south. Surrounded by pine woods and with three blue-flag beaches, it is one of the most elegant and long-established urbanisations of the coast. In this guide we go over its most relevant facts: population, economy, festivals, tourism and gastronomy.
General information
Being a residential area —and not an independent municipality— Dehesa de Campoamor does not have its own official INE figures. It forms part of Orihuela Costa, which as a whole exceeds 26,000 registered inhabitants. Campoamor has around 950 registered residents, a figure that multiplies notably in summer with the arrival of families and tourists. It totals more than 2.5 km of Mediterranean coastline, lies about 12 km south of Torrevieja and enjoys an average annual temperature above 18 °C. It is easily reached via the N-332 and the AP-7 motorway.
Demographics and nationalities
Unlike other areas of the coast, Dehesa de Campoamor retains a strong Spanish character: close to 60% of its population is of Spanish nationality, largely families from Orihuela itself and the interior who have their second home here. The split by sex is balanced, with an approximate percentage of 50% men and 50% women. Among the foreign population, the following stand out:
- Britons, the largest foreign group (a little under 20%).
- Residents from other European countries (Scandinavians, Germans, Belgians).
This mix gives Campoamor a family-friendly and quiet atmosphere, somewhat different from that of other more international urbanisations of the surroundings.
Economy
The economy of Dehesa de Campoamor revolves around three great pillars:
- Residential tourism: the area's driving force, with apartments and luxury detached houses with sea views.
- Boating and leisure: the Puerto Deportivo Miguel Caballero, with 348 moorings and a yacht club, is a great attraction.
- Hospitality and catering: a well-kept gastronomic offer beside the beaches and the marina.

Other points of interest
The urban development of Dehesa de Campoamor began in the 1970s, when the first tall buildings and tourist complexes that shaped the area started to be built. Its name alludes to the old dehesa of pine woods that still characterises the surroundings, one of the greenest spaces of Orihuela Costa. With its full set of blue flags, its marina, its pine woods and a family-friendly and serene atmosphere, Dehesa de Campoamor brings together all the attractions of the southern Costa Blanca with a hallmark of its own.
