Cabo Roig: the exclusive jewel of Orihuela Costa
Cabo Roig is a coastal residential area located in the south of the province of Alicante, in the Comunidad Valenciana, within the Vega Baja del Segura district. It forms part of Orihuela Costa (municipal area of Orihuela) and sits on a rocky outcrop —Cabo Roig means «Red Cape», for the colour of its cliffs— a few kilometres south of Torrevieja. It is considered one of the most exclusive and beautiful urbanisations on the whole Costa Blanca. In this guide we go over its most relevant facts: population, economy, festivals, tourism and gastronomy.
General information
Being a residential area —and not an independent municipality— Cabo Roig does not have its own official INE figures. It forms part of Orihuela Costa, which as a whole exceeds 26,000 registered inhabitants. Cabo Roig has around 450 registered residents, a figure that multiplies enormously in summer with the arrival of tourists and second-home owners. It is located about 8-9 km south of Torrevieja, with excellent connections via the N-332 and the AP-7 motorway, and borders La Zenia to the north and Campoamor to the south.
Demographics and nationalities
The character of Cabo Roig is deeply international. The split by sex is balanced, with an approximate percentage of 50% men and 50% women. Among the most present nationalities, the following stand out:
- Britons and Irish, the most numerous groups.
- Swedes and Scandinavians, with a very notable presence.
- Germans and other Europeans, alongside the Spanish population.
More and more people are moving their permanent residence here to enjoy its enviable climate all year round, with average temperatures around 20 °C and more than 300 days of sunshine a year.
Economy
The economy of Cabo Roig revolves around three great pillars:
- High-end residential tourism: the area's driving force, with luxury villas and well-kept urbanisations that make it one of the most sought-after areas of the coast.
- Boating and leisure: the Marina de Cabo Roig is a leading marina, with moorings and water activities.
- Hospitality and catering: an excellent gastronomic offer concentrated in the marina and on the promenade beside the N-332.
Emergency and home security services
Cabo Roig is made up of numerous homes —above all high-end detached houses and seafront villas— with a very high proportion of foreign residents and second homes. That is why it is one of the areas where reliable locksmith services are most needed on the whole coast. It is very common for owners who spend periods away to return and find the door jammed, or for incidents to arise with keys inside the house after arriving on holiday.
Our emergency door opening service covers Cabo Roig and the whole of the surroundings of Orihuela Costa and Torrevieja, with on-call locksmiths available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. By day or in the early hours, in high season or in winter, there is always a professional ready to act quickly on openings of homes, villas, apartments, storerooms, lock changes and armoured doors, a service especially valued in a high-end residential area with a large international community.
Festivals and traditions
Being a young and very international enclave, Cabo Roig combines Spanish traditions with celebrations typical of its foreign community:
- Summer festivals and open-air dances around the marina and the seafront promenade.
- Boating and sporting events linked to the Marina de Cabo Roig.
- Celebrations from the international calendar, keenly experienced by the British, Irish and Scandinavian community.
Tourism: what to visit
Cabo Roig is one of the most beautiful and exclusive spots on the Costa Blanca:
- The Torre de Cabo Roig, a 16th-century military watchtower, declared a Site of Cultural Interest (BIC), built to defend the coast from pirate attacks and which gives the place its name.
- Its blue-flag beaches and coves: La Caleta (Playa de Cabo Roig), horseshoe-shaped and with very calm waters, and Cala Capitán.
- The Marina de Cabo Roig, a marina where you can go kayaking, paddle surfing, diving, jet-skiing and other water activities.
- The seafront promenade among reddish cliffs, one of the most beautiful of Orihuela Costa, with views that reach as far as La Manga.
Gastronomy
The gastronomic offer of Cabo Roig is as varied and high-quality as its atmosphere. Here coexist:
- The arroz a banda and seafood rice dishes, which can be enjoyed with sea views next to the Torre.
- The fresh fish and shellfish of the Mediterranean.
- A wide presence of international cuisine (British, Irish, Italian), a reflection of the diversity of its residents and visitors.
Other points of interest
The name of Cabo Roig («Red Cape» in Valencian) refers to the characteristic reddish colour of its cliffs. Its most emblematic element is the 16th-century watchtower, ordered to be built in the times of Philip II, which formed part of the network of defensive towers of the coast —together with that of Torre de la Horadada or the vanished tower of Torrevieja— to raise the alarm against attacks by Barbary pirates. Today, restored, it crowns the marina and forms part of a restaurant. With its exclusive atmosphere, its coves of crystal-clear waters and its well-kept urbanisation perfectly integrated into the surroundings, Cabo Roig brings together all the attractions of the southern Costa Blanca. A place where having trustworthy 24-hour locksmiths brings the peace of mind that residents and second-home owners deserve all year round.
